Delight yourself in the Lord and He will give you the desires of your heart

I have always been intrigued by this verse.

We all want our heart’s desires, right? I have loads of unfulfilled desires. Wouldn’t it be great if we could discover the keys to fulfilling our desires? According to , it sounds like the key is Delight Yourself.

How do you delight yourself in the Lord? What does that look like?

The image above, I think, holds one key of what delighting looks like – being a kid! A kid sees things differently to adults. They have wonder in their eyes. Everything is new. They aren’t tainted by bad experiences. Kids are experts at living by faith. They take people at their word. Kids laugh out loud! They giggle, dance, run and hug. They are just totally excited with life.

Is that how you feel towards God? When you think about God and His love offer ,do you just want to dance and be delighted?

I thought that I would go a bit deeper into the Hebrew to discover any Hidden Hebrew Treasures that may be lurking. What I found was something truly remarkable.

To Delight Yourself comes from the Hebrew verb arnag  which means – to be pampered, to be happy about, take exquisite delight in, to make merry over. So we could say “Pamper yourself in Yahweh” or “Make yourself happy in Yahweh”

It is a Hithpael imperative which means that it is a command that you do to yourself.

I like the sound of that definition! It gives me an image of someone who is excited about God and everything that comes with being connected to Him. Spending time with God is like having a spa day!

Steven Cole (pastor) commented on the psalm and said ” Be captivated with the Lord and all the He is. Rather than focusing on the things which the world seeks, focus on the Lord. In gaining the Lord, you gain everything you ever need.”

Websters Dictionary (1828) tells me that being delighted is more of a permanent pleasure than being joyful. It is not dependent on sudden excitement. This delightfulness is not dependent on circumstances it comes from inside – we are in control and we can delight ourselves in God.

It is a call to seek our happiness in God, in His being, His perfections, His friendship and His love. To expect all our happiness from Him and to seek happiness in Him. Every name, attribute, word or deed of Yahweh should be delightful to us and in meditating on these our inner man , our soul should be glad and our desires fulfilled.

What is it about God that delights you?
